About Transition TV

Transition TV was formerly an Electronics Repair company, started in 2009. However, over the years, Jer often found himself helping customers switch to antenna from Cable and Satellite. Coincidentally, 2009 was the same year over-the-air OTA TV signals switched from analog to digital. Digital TV is still the highest quality television standard today. In addition, Jer often found himself consulting customers on how to use their smart TVs and devices.
Before the pandemic, 68% of Jer’s work was related to cord-cutting services. Post-pandemic, the worldwide semiconductor shortage has spilled over into the electronics repair parts, business sector and made it a challenge to continue to repair TVs as before. This accelerated Jer into the inevitable direction he was already headed before COVID-19.

We don’t sell cable and satellite service, but instead, consult you, install, and setup your new alternatives.

The Transition from an electronics repair company to a cord-cutting antenna and consulting company was driven by the changes we all faced and shared through the pandemic. Emerging from the quarantine, Jer is now happy and eager to provide the same excellent service he always has, but to an all-exclusive clientele who wishes to Transition away from high Cable provider bills. Making the switch is often confusing. As we all Transition into our “new normal” routines, Jer is happy to help those who wish to Transition from cable and satellite to antenna and streaming alternatives. TransitionTV is here to help you make watching TV affordable and enjoyable once again.

Transition TV services all of Western Michigan. See our service areas page. Normal rates remain within one hour drive time from Grand Haven, MI. However, Transition TV will often help people outside this region. For outside regions, billing begins after one hour drive time. Transition TV has helped people as far north as Mancelona, Michigan, as far east as Detroit, and as far south as Benton Harbor.

No. Although other websites make it sound so simple and easy to install an antenna, TransitionTV disagrees in most cases. Does a mechanic sell a motor without installing it? An antenna is the engine that makes the rest of the system work. For this reason, it is vital antennas get installed optimally and in a manner to last for years to come.

Did you know that you can place an antenna in the wrong spot on a roof and move it only 3 feet to the right or left and sometimes be the difference between losing ten stations or gaining them? Not only is your home’s physical location a key factor to great reception, but so is the antenna placement on your roof. This is what separates an amateur antenna installer from a true professional. Having the proper knowledge, equipment, and experience with the transmissions makes TransitionTV shine and rise above the rest. The specific antenna placement and direction pointed, down to the inch is not something anyone can guess at. Understanding radio frequencies (RF signals) and how they work is like a magician saying abracadabra and suddenly making nothing turn into up to 50 channels of local TV. Although it might seem like magic, it’s just science and a solid understanding of optics and RF radio waves.

As you can see, buying any ole’ great-sounding antenna and slapping it up on the roof is not something that just any husband and wife will get right without expert help. Not even after a hundred “HOW”S THAT!?” shouts and adjustments from the rooftop.

In addition, It’s not safe to climb on a roof with no experience. TransitionTV has come across four accounts in the past where people fell from the roof and injured themselves before calling us. One individual fractured his neck and spent a year in recovery. Is that all really worth saving a few extra dollars?

A wise man once said, “Do what you do best and hire out the rest.” Call an expert and get expert results. Save time, hassle, risk, and money. Call TransitionTV today!

For over a decade now, Transition TV has never worked a day without insurance. Fully insured for your assurance.

Licensing is not a requirement for antenna installation in the State of Michigan. There is no board of directors or department that oversees Antenna, cable, and satellite installers. We are responsible to the public on our own accounts. However, Transition TV’s reputation is important, and to gain your confidence, we invite you to read our reviews online.

Antenna Questions

If you enjoy any of these networks and want to watch them for free, then yes, you need an antenna.
WWMT CBS, CW, Comet, WOODTV8 NBC, Bounce, LAFF, WZZM13 ABC, WZZM13 Weather, True Crime, Quest, Twist, MyTV, COZI, CourtTV/Mystery, Fox17, AntennaTV, Get TV, DayStar, PBS, PBS Kids, PBS Life, PBS World, WOTV41 ABC, Dabl, GRIT, WoodTV8 Weather, ION, HSN, TCT/TBN, SBN, theGRIO, IND, MeTV, H&I, DECADES, RetroTV, QVC, SHOP LC.

No, there’s really no such thing as an HD antenna. It’s just marketing jargon used by one manufacture and copied by the rest. A single piece of copper wire can receive an HD signal, just the same as an “HD antenna.” High Definition technology is NOT in the antenna or the amplifiers but in how the networks send the signal and convert it into an HD TV. Don’t fall for the hype of an “HD antenna.” Just make sure you have an HD TV, and you will be fine.
The broadcasts look fantastic on an HD TV, and it’s the first thing customers notice; how crystal clear the picture is. Your cable and satellite company has an antenna at their central hub. They receive the HD signal, then deconstruct it and convert it to a computer MPEG file. It then travels many miles through a wire and eventually reaches your cable box, where it is reconstructed and presented as an equal HD signal. After all that, it lost quality, and you never know this until you watch a true uncompressed HD signal from your own antenna for the first time. It’s always a WOW moment for first-time customers. Contact us for a quote on an install.

Choosing an antenna based on the manufacture’s own claim that it can get TV stations from a certain distance is all nonsense. Some antennas have claims that they can get signals from a 250-mile range. This is a blatant lie. Even the biggest and best antenna in west Michigan will only pull signals from about 50 miles. Factors like transmitter tower height and power, the frequency used, weather, trees across the entire horizon, plus your distance from the tower, chosen matching antenna to their frequency, your antenna height, direction, LTE and FM nearby towers, trees and buildings, amplified properly, grounding, total system length of cable, number of TVs connected, unused connections, connection types home interference, the brand of TV, etc., etc., etc.

There are way too many factors involved to trust a range claim on a box or online description. All of these factors determine which antenna you need.

To make this process easier and free of expensive trial and error, the best thing to do is call the professional at TransitionTV. Have an expert take away all the hassle and headache of figuring out which antenna works best for invisible TV signals no one can see without proper equipment and experience. Contact us for help.

Yes! Once the antenna and installation are initially paid for, it is yours to keep. A proper outdoor antenna usually lasts up to 35 years.

You also own the streaming devices like Roku, Firesticks, Apple TV, Chromecast, Smart TVs, etc. You own these, and there are no silly monthly lease fees like Cable and Satellite companies harbor over customers for the lifetime of the service.

Imagine that: no more monthly lease fees for equipment!

Once you buy an outdoor antenna and have it installed properly by TransitionTV, they usually last up to 35 years with little maintenance. Occasionally a cable connector might need to be replaced or an amplifier after about 10 to 15 years, but the systems are built to last and handle our Michigan weather conditions.
As far as streaming devices and smart TVs, well, like any electronic device, they can last from a few years on up to several decades, depending on their build quality and usage. Firmware updates are a factor as well. Some devices can age-out and no longer be supported by their own manufactures. The average lifespan of any electronic device is about five years. Streaming devices only cost around 50 dollars or so, which means they often pay for themselves almost right out of the box. Replacing them when needed is usually never a financial factor when compared to a cable or satellite bill.

The above factors mentioned already determine what antenna people should use. No one needs more or less of an antenna than their location requires. Also, placing an antenna in the attic or indoors can reduce signals by up to 50% or more, even if it’s the biggest and best-amplified antenna. Some locations are close enough to transmitters to hide them or use smaller rooftop antennas. However, places like along the Michigan Lakeshore often require a medium to large outdoor rooftop antenna with a matching amplifier.

Having the wrong configuration can sometimes provide too strong or too weak signals–both scenarios produce the same weak signal/no signal effect. Let a professional installer at TransitionTV help you determine which antenna is best for you and your local broadcast interests. Doing so can save you time and money and leaves the guesswork out.

In over a decade, TransitionTV has never had a single complaint of a roof leaking from an install. They hold up to winds over 100 mph and also will not rip off. TransitionTV owner/operator used to install roofs as one of his first jobs 25 years ago. It was then that he got experience on rooftops. TransitionTV uses flexible caulk to fill gaps and screw-holes. This allows flexibility during all seasons and weather changes. In addition, a liquid rubber coating is placed as an additional leak-free reinforcement. TransitionTV rooftop antenna installs are guaranteed leak-free, solid, and will outlast most roofs themselves (around 35+ years). Rest assured, your antenna will be professionally installed and free of leaks, strong enough to hold up to winds as high as 135 mph, as we have seen.

Most areas in the greater Grand Rapids region can get all of these free broadcast networks. The Lakeshore and outer regions should expect a few less.

Check the channel lineup for further details. If you would like additional cable networks, there are affordable streaming services that complement antennas. There are many streaming options, and listing them all here would be unnecessary without first knowing which additional channels interest you. Price ranges for streaming alternatives range from $5.00 per month up to $65.00 per month. Choosing the wrong one(s) could accidentally put you into another cable bill scenario. Contact TransitionTV directly for more info. Consultations are available.

Streaming Questions

Streaming service does NOT require an antenna or a cable TV subscription. Streaming service is when you use your current internet and a smart TV or Roku device to watch TV through that connection. Firesticks, Apple TV, and Chromecasts are some other devices that let you stream on your TVs, but you don’t need them if you have a smart TV. Smart TVs have apps built into them that allow you to stream content.

Streaming options are boundless. You can stream everything on YouTube plus lots of shows and movies through Pluto, Tubi, Xumo, all for free. Many Cable networks, however, will still require a subscription alternative like Philo, for example. Philo does not offer local channels or sports but offers 60+ popular Cable channels for around $25 per month. Antenna gets you the rest, and there is never a monthly fee for watching TV on an antenna.

General Questions

Cutting the cable, or cutting the cord, is a term that has become popular when people switch from cable or satellite TV service to antenna or streaming alternatives. This is because the arbitrary pricing from cable and satellite providers has reached its limit for what people are willing to pay vs. what they get in return. Usually, when those bills hit the $200 per month mark, people generally start seeking alternatives. The good news is that there are alternatives to those pricey provider packages. So join the millions and cut the cable today!

Keep it simple! When transitioning away from cable or satellite providers, the alternative options can seem overwhelming. Antenna, Netflix, Hulu, Sling, Youtube TV, Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, Philo, “MILO-SCHMILO!” It all becomes a confusing sea of nonsense and can frustrate people away. Don’t worry, however. That’s where TransitionTV comes in. We listen to what your favorite shows or networks are and recommend only what you need, and also fits your budget.

Currently, you do NOT need internet service to receive antenna broadcast signals. ATSC 3.0 might require it in the future. For now, however, if you want to stream some of your channels, please keep your internet service active. Cable companies and internet providers often sell different speeds, but they don’t want you to know about this. Of course, they prefer to oversell you their fastest and most expensive internet service they have, but most people don’t need 300mbs or 1T speeds. A home of 4 streaming TVs should have no less than 50mbps to 100mps speeds, but 25mps speeds are okay for a single, smart TV and a couple who only uses occasional internet. Ask your provider about their slower internet speed offerings. When they say they don’t have them, ask again…yes, they do.

Of course, the cable companies do indeed try to lure new customers in with “Package deals,” but as usual, the price skyrockets once you are a loyal customer for a year. When you cut their crap and cut the cable, expect them to jack the price up for only using the Internet and canceling the rest. If you use a landline phone, keep it, but cancel it if not. Solo internet prices usually range from $70 per month to around $90 for their fastest speeds. Ask them about their slower speed offerings, and don’t let them fool you into believing you need super-fast speeds if you don’t. 50mbps to 100mbps for a home with four smart TVs are is, but for a single or two-person home with 1 or 2 TVs, then 25mbps would also work okay.

Getting your favorite shows will depend on which network they are aired on. Antenna broadcast television has about 55+ local networks, including ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS, CW, MeTV, Retro TV, etc., and others can be found through streaming. Some networks on streaming are free, while others charge more reasonable rates than traditional Cable and Satellite Providers. Many cable cutters get their local shows, news, and sports from an antenna and complement this service by adding an additional streaming service that carries their cable network shows. Depending on what you like, you may need a free streaming service or a paid one. It’s confusing to know which one to choose at times, and it is easy to subscribe to what you don’t need. This is where TransitionTV helps. Contact us to assist you in selecting the correct options based on your individual TV entertainment desires.

Yes and no, and it depends on what sport and schedule you wish to watch. An antenna can provide local sports that are carried by ABC, NBC, Fox, and CBS. Enjoy football, baseball, golf, racing, and more when aired as scheduled and maintained by these networks. Want more sports? There are some additional options on Pluto (free) and Amazon Prime Video (subscription) ESPN+ (subscription). You do need a cable or satellite provider to watch Fox Sports Detroit, but Fox Sports is available on Pluto for Free. Fox Sports tailors more to highlights than specific shows. You can watch Thursday night football and many live baseball games on Amazon Prime. Pluto offers several live sports options as well.

TV service contracts attempt to discourage people from canceling their services. This helps the cable and satellite companies but does not help the subscriber, nor does it make it appealing to cancel an unappealing service. If you are currently under a contract with your provider, see how much time is left and how much it will cost to cancel early. Sometimes, it just makes sense to cancel early and pay the early termination fee. Early termination fees sometimes trickle down as you near the end of your contract, so it might not be as high as you think. Getting out of a contract is liberating. Loyal customers should not be obligated to yet another contract at the end of a current one. So TV provider contracts become an arbitrary evil until you break yourself from them. Cancel with confidence, but cancel only at the time of switching to antenna or streaming alternatives. Also, keep your internet service with your cable company if you plan to stream or wish to continue only that service.

There are NO contracts with antenna broadcast TV, so enjoy the freedom! Most streaming services also do NOT require contracts. At the time of this writing, there are no streaming services to be found that obligate customers to sign annual contracts.

How Much Does It Cost?

The cost to cut the cable and switch to an alternative will depend on a few factors. If you are only switching to an antenna for local channels, the cost is just an upfront initial installation and equipment fee. The fee depends on your area and exactly which antenna and equipment you need. Not all antennas work the same in all areas. Prices usually range from a one-time setup of $450 to $850 for a typical install, based on house size, location, number of TVs, etc.
If adding additional streaming devices or services, the costs can go up, but nothing unreasonable especially compared to a traditional cable and satellite bill. Some streaming services are free, and your smart TV might already be the only device you need. For others, a Roku player or Firestick TV might work better. These devices are free to use but cost around $50 or so to buy. They might initially ask for a credit card number when setting them up, but this is standard and to verify identity, plus have a payment option available if you decide to rent a movie or subscribe to a monthly service.
Monthly services can range in price depending on which service you choose. Some, like PlutoTV, are completely free and include about 150 streaming channels to watch. You will be familiar with some channels with the free services, but don’t expect too many current and popular premium channels without paying for them.
Cable networks like Discovery, History, HGTV, Science, Hallmark, MTV, VH1, CMT, Paramount, etc., are often owned by the cable companies themselves. Getting cable channels for free, legally, is unrealistic, but getting them for a better price is definitely an option. An antenna will indeed get you networks like ABC, NBC, CBS, CW, PBS, FOX, and up to 40 more broadcast channels for absolutely free of monthly costs. However, the premium Cable networks mentioned above can be purchased separately for a monthly fee of around $25.00 per month. You can expect about 60 of the existing popular cable networks people love to watch with an added premium streaming service.
Many cord-cutters often use combo services like an antenna for local broadcasts and streaming for cable networks. Streaming requires an active internet connection, so, unfortunately, you won’t get away from that bill. Still, you can indeed trim your total cable and satellite bill down by usually half or more in most cases. That all adds up to extra money in your pocket, right where it belongs.

There is no monthly fee to cut the cable when using an antenna for local broadcasts. Local broadcast networks like ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS, CW, and up to 50 more, are all free of monthly fees when you cut off ties with Cable and Satellite Providers. If you look closely at your cable bill, you will notice a fee for “Local,” and they indeed are charging you to watch these free broadcasts. This fee is because the networks are licensed, and they pass that licensing fee over to you. But why pay for something free? Cut the cable and get an antenna.

As far as cable services like Discovery Channel, History, Science, HGTV, MTV, etc., all these networks belong to the Cable companies, and they control the licensing for those networks. The good thing that cable-cutters should know is that there is significantly less expensive access to the same cable networks you love. Learn more about these online streaming services.

There are many ways to save money when cutting the cord, so adding up the savings would depend on the exact alternatives you choose. Let’s look at switching to an outdoor antenna. You get up to 50 local channels and cut the cable company right off except for the internet portion.

If your bill was $200 per month with a cable package and you keep the internet, you cut your bill in half and much less in most cases. For simple purposes, let’s say you save $100 per month with an antenna. That’s $1,200 savings each year and $12,000 in savings every 10 years. Yes! People really do fork out that much money over the years. An antenna should last 30 years minimum, so that’s a total savings of $36,000; even more when you consider cable bills increase every year, but antenna broadcasts never cost any fees to watch.

Yes, there is an initial fee to install an antenna properly, but even the initial $450 to $850 cost to setup will pay for itself in the first year. Everything after that is money in your pocket. The savings are real, so what are you waiting for? Why pay for free TV?

Switching Over Questions

There’s no need to wait unless you are in a contract that holds you back. Sometimes it is cheaper to pay their early termination fees and simply be done. Imagine shaving off over $100+ per month from your cable bill? Why continue to spend that much when you don’t have to? Switch today. Call TransitionTV and schedule an appointment for services.

Switching is only a phone call away. The first step is to call TransitionTV and schedule an appointment. From there, we come out and install an antenna, set up your streaming and smart TV, or both. Don’t forget to cancel your Cable or Satellite TV service after this.

Transition TV works all year and has the proper safety gear for each climate event. Regardless, Transition TV won’t work in active snow or rainstorms. However, most West Michigan weather is spotty so rescheduling may only happen if there is a large forecast or radar image indicating a long storm that day. Distant forecasting is often unreliable in West Michigan.

The next step is to contact Transition TV and schedule an appointment for an antenna install, consultation, streaming device setup, or all of the above. What are you waiting for? You could already be saving a ton of money. Most people save an average of $1,200 per year when they “cut the cable” and have TransitionTV help guide them. Call today (616) 953-6184
